return voyage

NICK'S COVE from BIG ROCK cottage. The night before, I woke up thirsty around 2 and got up for a drink of water. I heard great splashing outside in the bay so I went out onto the balcony and listened carefully. The afternoon storm had passed so the stars were visible but it was still fairly dark and hard to see anything out there. Then I thought I saw lights moving. yeah, they were moving just under the water exactly where the splashing sounds came from. Long gentle beams of rippled light sending trails beneath the surface; gone almost before they appeared. Now I remembered; someone said they rescued a baby seal that day on shore right next to us. I left the cottage door open and got back into bed and lay there before I fell asleep, listening to them as they fed on herring and anchovies; barking and laughing up at the moonless sky.
